Entry #7 Hashtags for sale?
Hashtags for sale?
You know, hashtags might seem simple little symbols floating around social media, but they carry a a lot more power than what people realize. In a world where attention. moves fast and connect spreads even faster, hashtags almost feel like a tiny billboards, labels we put "up for sale" to whoever might be search for them. They're not just selling a product, but they are providing something like connections, visibility, and context.
What are Hashtags?
A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by the “#” sign. On social media, hashtags organize content, highlight topics, and make posts easier to find. Personally, I see them as shortcuts that redirect my audience to references I’ve made or provide context without over-explaining. While I often use them as personal reference tools, they can also help posts reach a broader audience.
Research shows that posts with relevant hashtags can increase engagement by up to 12.6% on Instagram (Source: Sprout Social), which proves that hashtags aren’t just decoration—they’re a tool for connection and communication.
#Community
I run an Instagram account where I post my art, and I usually add hashtags in the comment section. This keeps captions clean while helping my posts reach communities with similar interests. Hashtags group posts under a theme, forming a sort of digital marketplace where people discover creativity, ideas, and conversations that matter to them. Im sure some of you may resonate with this because almost every person in this generation have some sort of communication platform where we can reach out one another. Especially for those who are in college, networking for some careers is key to connections.
In class, we’ve discussed how online communication relies on understanding your audience and the medium you’re using. Hashtags are a perfect example they help your content “speak the language” of the community you want to reach. Whether it’s other artists, hobbyists, or enthusiasts, hashtags make sure your work is seen by the right people.
Why do hashtags matter?
In a sense, hashtags are like learning a language of their own. They tell others what your post is about and show where it “belongs.” When used well, hashtags start conversations and connect people within communities who share similar interests. Social media offers many ways to communicate—through photos, videos, comments, or even silent posts—and hashtags help tie all these interactions together.
For art-related content, hashtags like #DigitalArt, #ArtCommunity, #IllustrationArtists, and #DailyArt, you get the idea. It helps your post reach people who are genuinely interested in your work. They foster engagement, build connections, and allow artists to be discovered by others in the creative community. Even with personal content, sharing posts with friends, family, or coworkers helps keep people updated on your life. For those who prefer privacy like I do, that’s also fine—but for people who want to reach communities where they can resonate and connect, hashtags can be a helpful tool as well.
Wrapping the Sales Up...
So when I say, "hashtags for sale", I am thinking about how each hashtags becomes a small offering to the world. It's a way of saying: Here's what I'm thinking. Here's where this belongs. Here's who might connect to so and so. A tiny symbol, but a doorway into connections and community!
